Manchester United is going through a phase of sports reconstruction. Under the guidance of Michael Carrick, the team has put together a positive streak in the Premier League, but internally they are already projecting the upcoming transfer market.

The departure of Casemiro at the end of the season will leave a structural void in the midfield. The Brazilian, a reference in balance, recovery, and leadership, will not renew his contract and forces the club to look for a high-profile replacement for the central axis of Old Trafford.

The name that is emerging strongly is that of Sandro Tonali, currently at Newcastle United. The operation could range from 100–115 million euros, a figure that would reflect both his performance and the inflationary context of the elite midfielder market.

Tonali in the Premier League: from Italian promise to complete midfielder

Since arriving in England after his time at AC Milan, Tonali has evolved into an integral piece of Newcastle's scheme. In a midfield shared with Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton, the Italian mainly assumed the role of main defensive midfielder, freeing his teammates for more offensive functions.

His impact can be explained by three central factors:

  • Physical and dynamic coverage: he averages 12.2 km covered per 90 minutes, one of the highest records in the league, only surpassed by Dejan Kulusevski of Tottenham Hotspur.

  • Recovery in key areas: he ranks among the best in the Premier for recoveries in the middle third per match.

  • Structural versatility: he can hold the base of the midfield, but also break lines with deep drives and changes of pace that disrupt defensive blocks.

Beyond the numbers, his tactical contribution is decisive. Tonali balances the team when it needs to close spaces, but he also has the reading to join in positional attacks, occupy inside channels, and create superiorities. He is a midfielder who interprets collective play from tactical discipline, although his deployment allows him to impact different phases.

A strategic signing in a record-breaking market

Manchester City may also have kept a close eye on his situation, attentive to the trend of recruiting proven talent in the Premier League. With his contract in effect until 2029, Newcastle is not obliged to sell, which enhances their negotiating power.

In a market where midfielders like Declan Rice, Enzo Fernández, or Moisés Caicedo have surpassed the nine-digit barrier, Tonali's value is framed within that logic. For United, the investment would not only aim to replace Casemiro but to redefine the profile of the team's “engine”.

The Italian combines physical endurance, tactical reading, and the ability to maintain flexible structures. In contexts of high intensity and rapid transitions —dominant characteristics in the Premier League— his profile fits the need for a midfield that balances recovery and progression.

Often undervalued for his silent role, Tonali represents the type of player who organizes without the need for constant prominence. If Manchester United finalizes the move, they will not only add talent: they will incorporate a piece capable of reorganizing the competitive axis of the team in the coming years.
